EXPERIMENTAL DATA ON THE CORRELATION BETWEEN HEPATIC AND THYROID FUNCTIONS

Abstract
By inhibiting the thyroid function of rats by methylthiouracyl administration, the liver injury caused by CCl4 treatment was slighter. The same problem was investigated in the present work on thyroidectomized rate. The toxic effect of CCl4 on the liver also seemed to decrease under such experimental conditions. This finding is demonstrated by gross anatomical, microscopical, histochemical and biochemical means. It us in the decrease of the serum hexosamine level demonstrable in liver injuries, the thyroid plays an important role whether the gland is inhibited by methyl-thiouracyl administration or by thyroidectomy. Decrease of the serum hexosamine level did not occur. The decrease of thyroid function, due either to thyroidectomy or to thiouracyl treatments, was found to enhance the tolerance of the liver towards CCl4.
