Abstract
Indoles and other metabolites of tryptophan can be conveniently separated on two-dimensional paper chromatograms with the organic layer of a butanol-acetic acid-water mixture (4:1:5, by volume) as first solvent and 20% (w/v) aqueous KC1 as 2nd solvent. The chromatographic behavior of nearly 50 compounds is described, and the chromatographic pattern of the principal substances related to tryptophan metabolism is summarized in a "map of the spots".
