Pneumoperitoneum in the newborn

Abstract
When respiratory symptoms occur early in the neonatal period, the infant should be closely observed for signs of vomiting, diarrhea, cyanosis, jaundice, and abdominal distention which may indicate spontaneous rupture of some part of the alimentary tract. Besides obtaining a roentgenogram of the chest, supine, upright, and lateral views of the abdomen are very important. The X-ray signs of pneumoperitoneum in the neonatal period have been discussed, and the radiologist may be in a position to aid in early recognition of this pediatric emergency.
