Abstract
Shigella vaccines were tested in institutions for mental defectives. Vaccines containing Flexner, Sonne and Schmitz strains gave moderate reactions on injns. The addition of Shiga strains or modified Shiga toxin resulted in severe reactions. Vaccines prepd. by the use of u.-v. light were somewhat more potent than those containing heat- or formalin-killed organisms. The total dosage was 6.25 billion organisms given in 3 weekly doses except for the vaccines containing Shiga toxin, which contained 1.5 billion Flexner and Sonne organisms and 0.024 mg. Shiga antigen given in 3 doses. There was no evidence that these vaccines were effective. Keywords
