Abstract
A technique is described by which highly perfect single crystals of CaF2, SrF2, BaF2, CdF2, LaF2, CeF2, PrF2, TbF2, MgF2, and ZnF2 have been prepared in a hydrogen fluoride atmosphere. Rare‐earth‐doped CaF2, and SrF2, LaF2, cobalt‐doped ZnF2 and MgF2, and nickel‐doped MgF2 have been successfully used as optical masers. These crystals were free of light scattering and revealed no strain pattern when viewed through crossed polarizers.
