Abstract
Thymine and ethanol compete for OH free radicals. In the presence of sodium chloride in acid solution the OH. radical is converted to a different species which reacts preferentially with thymine. By varying theride ion concentration independently it is shown that the conversion depends on both quantities and follows apparent third-order kinetics with''a rate7. 6 X 109 liter2 mole-2 sec-1 for the reaction OH. + Cl- + H+[forward arrow] Cl. + H2O.
