Abstract
We present new measurements of infrared reflectivity and transmission of the quasi-one-dimensional crystal Zr, using light polarized both parallel and perpendicular to the chain axis. A comparison between phonon frequencies derived from our experiments and those from earlier Raman scattering experiments indicates that the interchain coupling is very weak. We conclude that the character of the vibrations of the Zr crystal, both parallel and perpendicular to the chain axis, is one dimensional.
