Abstract
The first recorded thoracotomy for tumor was reported by Osias Aimar1 in 1778. Von Speicher, 2 in 1881, reported twenty-eight cases collected from the literature, but only a few of these had been treated surgically. Parham, 3 in 1898, reported two cases of his own in which successful operations had been performed, and 101 cases from the literature. This series included the smaller series previously reported by von Speicher, 2 Quénu and Longuet, 4 and others. In 1913, Lund 5 added twenty-seven cases to the list, including one of his own. I have found thirty-five additional cases in the literature, and twenty-three in the records of the Mayo Clinic since 1910, making a total of 188.
