Abstract
Characteristics of self-phase-modulation (SPM) spectra observed when intense picosecond pulses are passed through liquids and solids are shown to be consistent with a theoretical model based on an electronic mechanism. Experimental observations and theoretical calculations show that the SPM mechanism must respond on a subpicosecond scale. Keywords
