Optical activity of ferroelectric Rb2ZnCl4

Abstract
The incommensurate phase of Rb2ZnCl4, one of the A2BX4 family crystals which exhibits incommensurate phase transitions before becoming ferroelectric or ferroelastic, is found to be optically active, i.e., g 23 = 3.2 × 10−6 at 1°C. The temperature dependence of g 23 indicates that the nature of the optical activity of Rb2ZnCl4 is classified in the same group as that of [N(CH3)4]2ZnCl4. However, the maximum value of g 23 of this crystal is approximately one order of magnitude larger than that of [N(CH3)4]2ZnCl4. This phenomenon is discussed briefly.
