Vibrational Spectrum and Structure of Nitryl Chloride

Abstract
An investigation of the infrared spectrum of gaseous NO2Cl and the Raman spectrum of liquid NO2Cl results in the following assignment of fundamental frequencies: ν1(a1)=1293 cm−1, ν2(a1)=794 cm−1, ν3(a1)=651 cm−1, ν4(b1)=1685 cm−1, ν5(b1)=367 cm−1, ν6(b2)=411 cm−1. The structural implications of the data are discussed, and it is concluded that the structure is ClN[open phi][open phi]OO· .However, it is not possible to say whether the molecule is planar or pyramidal.
