Laser fluorescence measurement of relative electron impact cross sections for metastable states of Ar+and Xe+

Abstract
Laser-induced fluorescence has been used to study the metastable content of argon and xenon ion beams extracted from an electron bombardment source. The first direct evidence for the production of the 3d'2G7/2 and 3d'2G9/2 levels of Ar+ has been obtained, and detailed measurements of the energy dependence of the excitation cross sections for the 3d'2G9/2Ar+ and 5d4D7/2 Xe+ levels have been carried out.
