Abstract
Continued investigations with over 116 spp. of plants, using esters of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, suggested more efficient herbicidal technics. Foliage sprays of 0.5% show no advantage over 0.25%, and possibly a disadvantage due to the trapping of the chemical within the burned leaves. Broad-leaved herbs are best controlled in spring, when small, or earlier for those with winter rosettes of leaves. Ferns and latex-bearing plants are highly resistant. Foliage-spraying of woody plants has been abandoned in favor of basal bark treatment without mechanical injury. Dormant-season treatments, with 5-35% mixtures in water, gave a max. of 95% kill (i.e., no resprouting the 2d season after treatment) on brush, including juniper, cedar, and laurel, and on trees up to 20 ft. in height. Yellowing of foliage may not be noticeable until several mos. after treatment.
