Simplified Method for Monitoring Adequacy of Brain Oxygenation during Carotid-Artery Surgery

Abstract

A CONCEPT of continuously monitoring oxygen saturation in the venous blood of the lateral sinus as a measure of adequacy of oxygenation of the brain was reported by Lyons and his associates.¹ They described apparatus for continuous determination of oxygen saturation and presented clinical results in 50 patients whose circulation through carotid arteries was interrupted during endarterectomy. This report describes application of the concept with the use of other equipment widely available in university and community hospitals throughout the country.
