THE EFFECT OF ALTERATIONS IN BLOOD VOLUME ON THE ANEMIA AND HYPOPROTEINEMIA OF HUMAN MALARIA 1

Abstract
Alterations in blood volume occurring during the course of induced malaria in 9 patients were detd. by means of the dye T-1824. Since the plasma volume is generally increased during active Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum infections, especially following paroxysms, the degrees of anemia and hypoproteinemia may be exaggerated. The total erythrocyte mass decreases during infection; the total circulating protein remains fairly constant. Fractional protein studies were not undertaken. Therapy for the shock encountered in severe falci parum infections should include red cell transfusions because of the marked erythrocyte destruction. The total blood volume tends to be reduced during convalescence.
