Investigations on the High Temperature Photolysis of Acetaldehyde

Abstract
A detailed investigation of the high temperature photolysis of acetaldehyde vapor has given results differing in certain details from those of previous investigators. The heat of activation found for the over‐all reaction (8.6±0.3 kcal.) leads with one assumption to a value of 75 kcal. for the energy of the C–C bond in acetaldehyde. The reaction between methyl radicals is rather accurately bimolecular. Values are given for the relative quantum efficiencies for the production of free radicals in acetone and acetaldehyde at elevated temperatures at two wave‐lengths.
