X-ray spectra and variability of some Seyfert galaxies and other high latitude sources

Abstract
Five extragalactic X-ray sources have been observed by the MSSL spectrometer on Ariel V. Three of these sources 2A 1348 + 700, 1415 + 255 and 1410 – 029 have previously been identified with active galaxies, whilst for the remaining two, 2A 1251 – 290 and 4U 1916 – 79, no single identifications have been made. The new data are consistent with the hypothesis that a significant amount of material lies in the line of sight to 2A 1348 + 700, 1410 – 029 and 4U 1916 – 79. There is also some evidence for variability in the sources 2A 1410 – 029, 1415 + 255 and 4U 1916 – 79.
