Abstract
The origin and a modern interpretation of the term “rhizosphere”, the zone of soil close to plant roots, are discussed with special reference to soil bacteria and protozoa. The physical, chemical and biological factors which are known to influence the rhizosphere populations of these microbes are briefly considered. Root exudates and electronmicrographs of roots are discussed in relation to microbial ecology.Keywords
