Abstract
Schistosomiasis, one of the more important worm infestations of mankind, is widely distributed over three continents, affecting more than 200 million people, and is often associated with considerable morbidity. Unlike almost all other parasitic infestations, schistosomiasis is increasing in prevalence as man attempts to use water and land resources more efficiently. The development of many countries in Africa and South America depends on the construction of new dams and the initiation of irrigation projects, which provide ideal breeding places for the snail host of the parasite.
