An Attempt to Determine the Absolute Number of Rats on a Given Area

Abstract

An area of town is trapped over a series of nights in a systematic manner for Rattus rattus and the results subjected to a theoretical statistical analysis in an attempt to calculate the probable total population. A theory of trapping is suggested which is an adaptation of the elementary kinetic theory of gases.
