Experimental extinction as a function of the prevention of a response.

Abstract
Using albino rats in an avoidance situation, after comparable training to escape from a shock compartment one group was extinguished in the conventional manner, while the other group was delayed in the shock compartment for 10 seconds before being allowed to escape. The delay group extinguished significantly faster than did the control group. Explanation in terms of "counter-conditioning" and reduced drive strength are offered.
