InterbandΓ6Γ8Magnetoabsorption in HgTe

Abstract
Magnetoabsorption associated with Γ6Γ8 transitions was investigated at 4.4 °K, on pure n-type HgTe thin crystals in the spectral region 300-400 meV for σ and π polarizations. Analysis of experimental spectra is performed using both the three-band model (including the nonparabolicity), and the theory of Luttinger. Band parameters are determined by fitting transition energies: EΓ8EΓ6=302.5 meV, mΓ6m0=0.028±0.001, and gΓ6=41±4 at Γ. Γ8 Luttinger parameters (γ1=12.8,γ¯=8.4,κ=10.5) satisfactorily explain interband and intraband Γ8 magnetoabsorption. The structure of Γ8 magnetic levels near Γ is quantitatively described by calculating the kH dependence of the energies in the [111] direction. A complex structure is found for a set of heavy holes.
