Normal molecules possess neutral excited states having excitation energy in excess of the ionization energy in which ionization does not always occur. These superexcited states play an important role in the radiation chemistry of gases, and perhaps also in the radiation chemistry of condensed phases. Some of their possible manifestations are explored.
