Abstract
Cerebral circulation and metabolism were studied 10 times in 9 patients with hyperthyroidism by the nitrous oxide method. The diagnosis of hyperthyroidism was based on clinical and pathological data. None of the cerebral metabolic functions varied significantly from the normal. This is in striking contrast to the known alterations of cardiac output and splanchnic oxygen consumption in hyperthyroidism. Cerebral metabolism is not increased by any procedure or disease yet investigated, and it would seem that the psychic manifestations of hyperthyroidism are not due to increased cerebral metabolism.
