Abstract
The semi-empirical model of Griessen and Driessen (1984) which relates the heat of formation Delta H of a metal hydride to the difference of the Fermi energy EF and the centre Es of the s band of the host metal, is used to calculate the volume expansion accompanying hydrogen uptake by a metal. The values obtained from the model are in good agreement with experimental data. Keywords
