Semiquinones are produced in the oxidation of o- and p-dihydroxyarenes with potassium superoxide. These radical anions in the case of o-dihydroxyarenes are further oxidized to dicarboxylic acids. The semiquinones were also obtained by reduction of the corresponding quinones with potassium superoxide.
