The authors visualize the mathematical method as uncovering structures in geography that can be expressed by appropriate mathematical models. After a discussion of mathematical matrices, as a framework for the collecting of geographic data, the authors illustrate the mathematical method by deriving formulas that measure the dispersion and concentration of population density in cities. Several types of cities are distinguished and appropriate formulas are developed.
