CARBOHYDRATE METABOLISM IN PREGNANCY IX: PLASMA LEVELS OF GLUCONEOGENIC FUELS DURING FASTING IN THE RAT1

Abstract
During 48 hours of fasting, circulating lactate, pyruvate and glycerol in pregnant rats did not fall below levels observed in virgin animals. Contrariwise, pregnant animals displayed more rapid and profound reductions in gluconeogenic amino acids (such as plasma alanine, serine, threonine, glutamine, and glutamate) coincident with the development of hypoglycemia.
