OBSERVATIONS ON BACTERIOPHAGE TYPING OF PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA

Abstract
A method for isolation, purification and characterization of bacteriophages for Ps. aeruginosa is presented. A set of 13 phages was separated on the basis of host range, plaque morphology, mutation and cross-resistance of 161 strains from hospital cases; 88.8% could be "typed" on the basis of patterns of lysis produced by this set of phages. Studies are also presented on the significance of "turbid plaque" formation. The phage patterns were reproducible in subcultures of the same strain and in different strains isolated at the same or different times from various sources in the same patient.
