Abstract
Amino acids and related compounds are utilized by washed suspensions of C. tetani in a manner similar to that previously reported for C. tetanomorphum. The "Stickland reaction" is not involved in the utilization of amino acids by C. tetani, the amino acids glutamic, aspartic and serine being attacked directly with the formation of CO2, NH3 and acetic and butyric acids. Appreciable amts. of lactic acid and alcohol are also produced during the utilization of aspartic acid. Essentially the same products are formed during the dissimilation of pyruvic and fumaric acids, together with considerable amounts of malic acid from fumaric acid. Glucose does not appear to be utilized by C. tetani.
