Abstract
THE last paper on this subject appeared in the Journal just over two years ago.1 Since that time several comprehensive progress reports on specific subjects that must be covered much more briefly in this review have appeared. They include discussions of duodenal ulcer by Brooks and Moore,2 on the pancreas by Warren and Cattell,3 on proctology by Hayden,4 on Hirschsprung's disease by Swenson5 and on portal hypertension by Leevy, Cherrick and Davidson.6 The selection of the relatively small number of references for inclusion in this survey will, in controversial fields, reflect to some degree my personal opinions.
