STUDIES ON THE PHYSIOLOGY OF LACTATION

Abstract
In 14 castrate and experimental cryptorchid [male] guinea pigs which had carried functional ovarian grafts for 3-10 mos. (whether the graft had been removed before treatment or not) lactation was induced by treatment with an anterior pituitary extract. In other experimenal cryptorchid animals injected with pyramided amounts of estrin for 11 wks. and then with pituitary extract, lactation occurred. It is concluded that, in the [male] guinea pig, lactation may be induced in the absence of any luteal influence operating on the mammary glands. The idea is advanced that normal lactation and some cases of experimental lactation may be explained on the basis of a release of the lactation-inducing factor by the removal of the ovarian influence on the anterior hypophysis.
