Effect of Atherosclerosis and Age upon the Serum Mucoprotein and Hexosamine Levels in Man

Abstract
Serum mucoprotein and hexosamine levels have been determined in atherosclerotic, nonatherosclerotic, and young male subjects. A highly significant elevation of both fractions was noted in the atherosclerotic group. Elevations due to aging were also obtained. It is suggested that these results are consistent with the view that arterial wall mucopolysaccharide depolymerization plays a role in the pathogenesis of human atherosclerosis.
