VENTRICULOGRAPHY BY DIRECT CATHETERIZATION OF THIRD VENTRICLE USING A WATER SOLUBLE SUBSTANCE

Abstract
A new contrast medium, densopax (sodium salt of 3-acetylamine 2,4,6-triiodobenzoic acid and polyvinylpyrrolidone), for use in central midline ventriculography is presented. This medium is opaque, non-irritant, viscous, hydrosoluble and has optimum absorption qualities.[See figure in the PDF file]The technique of central midline ventriculognaphy, which is considered to be the procedure of choice in the roentgen diagnosis of surgical lesions of the posterior cranial fossa, is described. The procedure is also useful in outlining Arnold-Chiani malformation. No adverse effects due to the intracranial densopax or meningeal reactions have been noted in our cases. In an inoperable case, necropsy did not show any lesion of the inflammatory type in the plexus on meninges which could be attributed to the densopax. In 5 hydrocephalic babies, injection of the medium did not provoke any disorder in consciousness or vegetative functions, either during or after its performance.
