Abstract
Thyroxine, thyronine, di-iodothyronine, di-iodotyro-sine, hydroquinone and monomethylhydroquinone all check the uptake of O by Na oleate or Na linoleate as detd. in the Warburg manometer; they also slow the rate of decolorization (oxidation) of carotene in benzene plus Na linoleate. This antagonism between thyroxine and carotene is unrelated to the metabolic, hormonal action of thyroxine. Common to the group of anti-oxidants investigated is para phenolic hydroxyl and the action is suggested to be due to the formation of complex salts with heavy metals (Fe, Cu) which can act as oxidation catalysts. KCN similarly checks the oxidations in question.
