The conception of packed solids covers a wide field ranging from packed beds to insulations of various kinds. Cell and quasihomogeneous models, particularly for packed beds, are summarized and compared. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on a comparison with experimental results. Topics like radiation contributions in different kind of insulating materials, packed bed chemical reactors, porous particles and wall to packed bed heat transfer are mentioned briefly.
