Spontaneous and Ultraviolet-induced Mutation in Escherichia coli: Interaction Between Plasmid and tif-1 Mutator Effects

Abstract
In E. coli, thermally-induced expression of the tif-I mutation causes enhancement of spontaneous and UV-induced mutagenesis. The effects of both plasmid expression and tif-I expression are recA+ dependent. The interaction between the plasmid and tif-I effects were examined to decide whether or not they act through the same mechanism. Analyses of variance showed that the joint effects of the plasmid pkM101 and tif-I are greater than additive, indicating that they affect separate steps in the same pathway of mutagenesis.
