Experiences with prosthetic reconstruction of the trachea and bifurcation.

Abstract
Extensive tracheal resections were performed to avoid imminent asphyxia in 9 patients. Airway continuity was restored with either a straight or a bifurcated Neville prosthesis. One patient had progressive perichondritis and the remaining 8 had advanced malignancy. Patients (3) died of complications due to the prosthesis, 15 days, 7 mo. and 10 mo. after operation. Patients (5) from their underlying disease and 1 patient is alive 13 mo. after reconstruction.
