Abstract
The absolute X-ray attenuation cross section of krypton in the vicinity of the K edge was measured. The data are analysed within the framework of the screened hydrogenic approximation using various sets of screening constants. Those obtained from relativistic Dirac-Fock calculations give the best agreement with the data, although significant deviations occur from the threshold up to about 100 eV above it. No deviations from monotonicity are observed, and the data seem to support recent theoretical predictions on the decisive role of relaxation and overlap effects in determining the shape of the cross section immediately above threshold. Jump ratios obtained from the data and from theoretical calculations are also presented and discussed. Keywords
