Synchronous displacement versus an addition–elimination mechanism in the nucleophilic displacement reaction of acyl halides

Abstract

Evidence is presented which suggests that the reaction of acyl halides with base proceeds via a concerted S_N2-like displacement, which may have a geometry analogous to that of alkyl S_N2 displacement.
