Influence of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid on Pathways of Glucose Utilization in Bean Stem Tissues

Abstract
Comparison of the utilization of specifically labeled glucose in bean stem tissues from normal and 2,4-D treated plants indicated that the percent radiochemical yield of respiratory CO2 and the glucose utilization as expressed by the ratio of synthetic function/catabolic function were changed in 2,4-D treated stem tissues. These changes were correlated with the dosage received by the plant. The yields of C14O2 from glucose-1-C14 in short time experiments used to evaluate the effect of 2,4-D on the participation of the direct oxidative pathway in glucose catabolism. Treatment with various amounts of 2,4-D caused a relative increase in the amount of glucose catabolized via the glycolytic sequences. Evidence was obtained to indicate that the synthetic pathways for cellular constituents in the stem tissue are not affected by 2,4-D.
