METABOLIC STUDIES OF PITUITARY INSUFFICIENCY

Abstract
A case of pituitary cachexia and one of pituitary dwarfism showed marked improvement during a control period in which the only treatment was good care, proper diet, rest. In pituitary cachexia there was loss of Mg and storing of other elements. In dwarfism there was retention of Mg. Cortico-adrenal extract administration was accompanied by rise in blood pressure (temporary), positive Mg balance, increased retention of Ca. Administration of anterior pituitary-like hormone of urine for 7 days was accompanied by prolonged rise in blood pressure, increase in negative Mg balance. Growth hormone produced no striking changes. Cases of cachexia and dwarfism became very ill with administration of thyrotropic hormone, A patient with myxedema showed no change in b.m.r. with thyrotropic hormone.
