Abstract

RELAXATIONS OF THE KNEE JOINT During the last few years serious thought has been given to the treatment of relaxed knee joints and many operations have been developed for the reconstruction of the crucial ligaments, most popular of which are those described by Hey Groves, Smith and Gallie. These procedures have been used with success in the type of disability for which they were designed, namely, the extremely relaxed knee joint, resulting from a complete rupture of one or both crucials plus a general relaxation of the capsule. The disability in these cases is so great that the patient is unable to use the member for the ordinary functions of civil life. In contrast to this type there exists among young, active athletes a type of relaxed knee that performs the normal functions of civil life but which does not permit the individual to participate in active, rugged athletic pursuits.
