By substituting CuCl2 (which gives greater sensitivity) for FeCl3 in Bial''s orcinol reaction, the pentose of nucleosides and nu-cleotides can be detd. photometrically. The extinction values for pure arabinose and xylose do not agree with the values for the pentose in purified adenosine and adenosine triphosphate; therefore, the pure pentoses should not be used as standards.
