Laser magnetic resonance of Hg (6 3P) atoms

Abstract
The 3P13P0 transition within the 6s6p 3P excited state of atomic mercury has been detected and measured by the technique of laser magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The experiment involved flowing excited Hg atoms through an absorption cell located inside the cavity of a carbon monoxide laser operating on a line at 1767.3624 cm−1, and Zeeman shifting some components of the 3P13P0 transition into resonance with the laser. The 3P13P0 fine structure interval is determined to be 1767.2159±0.0007 cm−1, and to be independent of isotope number within this uncertainty.
