Abstract
A device for generating an alkali plasma in thermodynamic equilibrium is described. It consists of a cylindrical tantalum cavity which is made incandescent by means of electron bombardment. The plasma obtained by contact ionization on the walls has a density varying from 1010 to 1012 cm−3 at a temperature of 2600°K, and is free from temperature, density, and potential gradients. A series of coaxial tantalum screens surrounds the cavity with the purpose both of limiting the supplied power and of making the cavity temperature uniform. The testing of the apparatus by means of a hot probe is also described. Keywords
