Abstract
After reviewing the available evidence relating to changes in various aspects of personality with age it is concluded that: 1) Interest change is rapid to about 25 yrs. of age and is then much slower. Late adolescence and the early twenties is the age of vigorous physical activity and sex-social interest. Thereafter the trend is toward non-competitive, sedentary, relatively solitary activities. 2) Adults dislike activities involving the disruption of established habits or the undertaking of new and varied activities. 3) There is an increased vocational restlessness and dissatisfaction in the 40''s. 4) Quantitative studies fail to show any undue emotional disturbance or increased rate of personality change at the period of menopause. 5) The dominant changes in motivation are waxing and waning of the sex drive and related social interests; the strong vocational pressure in young adulthood and later last minute efforts to attain success; and the later importance of philosophy of life and cultural values. 135 studies are cited.
