Abstract
Anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder that is reaching epidemic proportions in this society, is discussed from a historical perspective. Criteria for diagnosing the disorder, factors contributing to its development, and the prognosis and current treatment strategies are discussed. A model for professional nursing intervention that focuses on consciousness raising, education, and referral for treatment is presented. Keywords
