Abstract
The discipline of digital image processing began its development over ten years ago, with the processing of digital data returned by the Surveyor lunar lander and by the Mariner 4 flyby of Mars. Digital processing is now routinely used throughout NASA's space progrfl d in a variety of other nonspace applications(1-6). The technology is now applied to diverse applications including geological exploration and medical diagnosis.
