Estrogen Inhibition of Androgen-Maintained Prostatic Secretion in the Hypophysectomized Dog

Abstract
The estrogen-androgen antagonism was studied in dogs as follows. Prostatic fistulas were prepared, and the volume of prostatic secretion under the stimulus of pilocarpine hydrochloride was determined. Hypophysectomy was carried out and decreasing amounts of cortisone acetate were administered. Testerone was given until the volume of prostatic secretion was restored to pre-hypophysectomy levels. Then estrogen was administered. Estrogen inhibition of androgen-maintained prostatic secretion occurs in the dog in the absence of the pituitary.
